talismans of calm

talismans of calm

I’ve been struggling this past week to make sense of things… to reconcile my own belief systems and preferences with others in my own, same country.

As an actress and text coach, my habit is to begin with, “If I was playing this character, what would need to be true for me in order for this (action/language/position) to be a solution…”

Since we, as a species, most usually take (or do not take) action believing it will be a solution to whatever circumstance that surrounds us, I find this simple practice usually lessens the distance, expands my heart energy, and I get a sense of what may be true for that person without “othering” him or her.

Usually this exercise reveals some sort of loss or fear, seeing life from a place of scarcity rather than abundance.

To take in this information, without judgement, is my way of meeting hearts. It invites me to wonder where my own fears and expectations may be limiting or causing a chaos. And from this place of listening, I choose to create new thoughts... because with each breath, I can rebalance.

My response to the news about the newly appointed Supreme Court Justice, was to promote self care. I created mini-care packages for friends who are at an edge, as Joan Halifax describes it in her book, Standing at the Edgea threshold where oppositions meet, where a map emerges, a generous plan newly created in order to find life-giving balance between these oppositional forces...

These simple packages hold a hand written card and talismans that are unique to those who will open them. My hope is to encourage the use of whole, authentic voices… because they are beautiful, multifaceted, complicated and required for this time in history...

One package holds soft yarn spun by a local weaver here in Bozeman – for a woman who knits to keep her hands agile and steady…

Another holds several packages of cards – for a woman who loves to send notes...

Another holds a Montana agate – to remind the recipient of her own innate strength, poise and ability to balance…

Yet another carries a perfectly smooth rock from the shores of the San Juan Islands – for a woman whose compass leads her back to the wide oceans she once crossed to create a new life…

And one carries teas and lozenges and treats for those embarking on a journey...

Sending calm into this world of loud and angry voices does not negate the need for change, but asks that any action taken comes from a place of authenticity and calm.

Thank you for being there for all of us who are saddened by the state of affairs in our country. It is difficult to keep positive at times. Yes, thank you for your wonderful words.
