writing for the week...

the week of february 28: distracted...

A memory came to mind most presently when I came across this story of Kai's...

Some of you know this, others may not - I met Kai when I was teaching in Indiana. He was a guest artist for a project that the Teaching Ed students were working on, and the lead faculty member invited just a few of us in the department to a dinner. The day after, I attended part of the class he was working with - just to hear what the man had to say to all these 20-something teachers to be... (and to secretly pass him a note to ask him to dinner that evening).

At the top of the class, we all sat around a large table and introduced ourselves, and the way I remember it (which admittedly might have been slightly different but probably not that much) is Kai asked that we share our first names, something else that was possibly where we were from or a favorite food or color or something random, and then (this I remember clearly) something we would change from our past...

I happened to be sitting next to him, so I was second to last and had a chance to hear some really thoughtful responses from these students, some of which I knew quite well, others only in passing. When it was my turn, there was no question in my mind what I would say to that last part... Nothing. I wouldn't change anything because even the ugly, difficult parts, the overlooked moments and failures of yesterday offered opportunities or little wisdoms that taught me how I wish to move through the world today...

The look on Kai's face when I answered told me three things: 1. that was not an answer he expected 2. it was one he liked 3. he'd be meeting me for dinner

I'd answer the question exactly the same way today... We make choices based on what we see. Hindsight has taught me not to wish to change the past, but to practice different ways of seeing...

always in motion,
fia
