For a vey long time, I've been interested in creating spaces where learning can happen. Which is why I often find myself asking this question: how might I seamlessly integrate skills practiced & usually reserved for the arts, into daily routines? I think of it as an ongoing exploration of how to bring my experience of the humanities into everyday living.
Imagine this workshop as an invitation to a practice toward...
I began the practice of writing in my late 20's - morning pages while I stood in line in the wee hours, waiting to sign up for auditions outside the Actor's Equity building in NYC. On yellow legal pads, I let the words sputter and spew without care or any fear that someone would stumble upon them. I wrote until the words no longer came, and then, on the way home, I'd tear the pages up, throwing the pieces away in garbage cans along the way.
That particular process helped me write with abandon and also see my thoughts as transitory, in motion.
I did not move on to writing in notebooks until after my divorce, when I was alone, in my 40's. Since then, writing for me has become a way through, out, into, toward and away from. It's taken the form of peer-reviewed articles in professional fields of inquiry, grant writing, some blogs and recipes here at Flying Edna, long letters and emails to loved ones across the miles, and countless pages in many notebooks. In all of these forms, the mechanics of writing in the body are the same.
I specifically picked this season for the workshop because October is a time of transition. The trees drop their leaves, temperatures change, and we turn to warming spices in the kitchen. Before the cold winter days arrive and we settle in, I want us to gather together in a space to consider the entire body as it engages in the art of writing.
Let me state this clearly: this workshop isn't about guiding you on what to write. It's about attending to the whole of you as you engage in the act of writing: the mental and physical practice together. In consideration of, and compassion for, the all of you.
We are going to focus on writing whole.
Surrounded by the beauty of Heritage Gardens, we'll spend our time together exploring:
- the anatomy involved in writing
- ways to ease unnecessary tension
- playful practices to help you (re)focus & bring awareness back to the present moment
- (re)defining language we use around creativity & our bodies
- a process that cultivates flexibility, adaptability, & creativity
- the profound, sustainable change that can occur when we understand we have options in the ways we move & think
The heart of this work is rooted in the Alexander Technique & my experience of nearly 20 years as a vocal production & text analysis professor, balancing analytical & kinesthetic learning principles. All of you fully present, telling the same story.
When that happens, there is flow, ease, grace, & efficiency - whether you're on stage, at a desk writing, or simply walking down the sidewalk.
