original pencil + watercolor: the man who tried to make sense of the whole

The man who tried to make sense of the whole from random parts he found at night: I once knew a man who walked arount town every night looking for notes that other people had lost or thrown out during the day. He put them all in a leather bag he carried esp. for that purpose. He took them home where he put them in a filing cabinet he built himself. He told me one time he hoped to collect enough of them that he'd discover a universal principle of what human beings do & if not universal for all human beings, at least the ones in that town. I asked him what he'd discovered so far. I have discovered that people write a lot of notes, he said, & I have no idea why. I've also discovered a lot of weird things happen at night around here, he said. & we decided that's where he was most likely on to something.
