bird & brush storyblocks

our signature bird & brush pieces. back for a limited time...

What is bird & brush? It's something we created in 2018 when we began Flying Edna. Like each of the pieces themselves, the explanation is layered...

Fia here. I've a long history with the name 'bird.' It's a name given to me by various dear ones in my life, each of whom had a way of seeing something in me before I was able to see it in myself. It became a term of endearment & encouragement of intuition. & Kai has a very long history with brushes. It's one of the ways he connects to the world. The brush meets the paper or wood & when mixed with the alchemy of his joy, perspective & heart wisdom, what results is work that has become familiar to generations...

As two established artists who met later in life, we knew we wanted to do work together. We also knew we needed to create a space that would hold us both, without one or the other having to get smaller in the collaboration. This third space we would reach into & create together required a place neither of us had ever been. So, after too-many-to-count discussions, failed prototypes, & moments of silence (separately & together), we came up with the process we call bird & brush.

Every bird & brush piece begins on a scrap of reclaimed wood. We cut, sand & prep the pieces before one of us takes a "blank" & starts painting... The other will usually have an opinion. Sometimes that matters... All these small paintings become a sort of working vocabulary that we have available for stories, artblocks & prints.

We began these in Montana. It's where we were when we first named the company Flying Edna. Inspired by the light, the mountains & vast sky, the colors & stories that came out of those three years is distinctly different than what is inspired here, living on Cape Cod.

Influenced by the softer light, the humidity and tides, we've found a whole new sense of bird & brush with the Cape series you see here...
