story keeper palimpsest: mermaid heart

palimpsests: "... something having usually diverse layers or aspects apparent beneath the surface..."

The piece shown is a slice of Shagbark Hickory from North Carolina. The side piece is fir. After it was shaped, Kai painted the first few layers with our usual bird & brush process, but instead of a secret wish, in between the layers, he wrote a story about a woman and the sea. He then added more layers, including the story you see, and created freehand woodcuts.

it's the only one of its kind.

            repurposed & handcrafted...

We have the deep joy of working with incredibly beautiful wood, sometimes from trees that are hundreds of years old... This means every piece that leaves our studio carries along its own history & is entirely unique.

The wood species will vary according to what we can source from local small businesses that share our ethos.

All our reclaimed wood products are made for you as soon as you place an order - which is why it may take us a day or two to get these out to you.

We shape, sand & wax each piece here in our studio. Woodcuts are done freehand. Unless stated otherwise, painted pieces have our unique bird & brush process: 4-6 layers of paint, graphite & ink (including a secret hand written wish between layers).

Our wood pieces come with a small card telling a bit about us & the piece, & are either wrapped in repurposed pages from old books or in an organic cotton bag.
